my grass is spurting up good. how do people get these thick lawns without having the grass cramped too much but still having it full.

It doesn't hurt to add more seed in the blank areas now... they may not come up at all if they didn't come up with the others...

Core aerating, with an over seed the first year after a new lawn then just every other year aerating would be good.
