spindle play

I have a spindle with up/down play, perpendicular to the deck. there is no play in the rotation of the blade, but the shaft inside the spindle and the pulley wheel on top move about a quarter of an inch. Vibrates like mad. Is this a repair needed issue or a "live with annoying vibration" issue?

Its a replace bearings ASAP issue. Vibration indicates imminent destruction.

Thank you for your help. So I can replace just the bearings and not have to buy entire spindle? That's great news.

When you get it apart you will see what shape the spindle is in. Usually its the bearings and or their races that are worn out.
