Guys the previous owner made a bad choice granted it lasted more than 8 years. I"m looking for some suggestions in what to do. I'm replacing the wood but need some help with the rest.
1. I can put the blocks back the way they were and put in some plants and or mulch and leave the problem for the next guy. 2. Get the brick onto a proper base. Check out www.allanblock.com they'll show you how to build retaining walls properly.

thanks for the response, now after reading my post I think i should be more clear about what I'm asking. The grade and several inches of the siding being buried is what I'm most concerned with. I'm looking for opinions on how to deal with that. The alternative would be to fix the block beds and drop dirt plants and mulch in them.

I am thinking...you never want to have wood in contact with earth. Its an invitation to termites and carpenter ants--and fungus rot. Discuss this with a termite specialist.
Needs redo of landscape with proper grade and clearance.

That's a wood siding wall and they have dirt piled up against it... or am I missing something???

Yes the framing is pressure treated lumber and the siding was 3/8 plywood with a rough cut exterior.

This is the 2nd thread in recent memory of people putting dirt up against an outside wall that wasn't concrete... I'd have nothing to do with it...

Agreed however I'm looking for ideas on how to solve the grade issue so I don't have to put dirt on the siding like the previous owner did.

You need a picture of the whole layout to figure out the best way to proceed...
Houses built into the hillside generally use 'crete, but even then,,, use a retaining wall a couple feet away from the house and drain away with a slope around the base,,, as though the hill wasn't there... those walls must be holding water in the Spring that runs mildew through the interior, I would think...
