I am doing a test in my own yard...

Trying to find out if when seeding in the fall in central Va. is it better to cover with a thin layer of straw???

What is you alls opinion?

Straw is not only tacky, but it can blow around, get bunched up, create bare spots all over your seeding bed and tells the world you can't grow grass w/out this old outmoded notion... at least shredded straw can be spread thin enough to effentually rot down into the soil and provide benefit that way...

I'm not trying to offend anyone, but that is my opinion, based upon what I see, when I see straw applied to lawns...
Now that I know that clay's texture(platelets) has nothing to do with water infiltration, percolation, or drainage
,,, I wonder what does...

I use straw on some bare hills. Help holds the seed in place and definatly holds moisture. Never had a problem with it blowing away. Watering, which should be done after seeding anyways, helps hold the straw together. If the customer thinks the straw its tackey they may want to just pay more and have the area in question sodded. I would never use straw for overseeing. If necessary I use some debris I pull up with the verticutter.
