Aeration depth opinions

I recieved my Exmark ride on aerator today, I used it and it was pretty damp soil .............does anyone agree with this possibilty....I was able to get maybe 3.5" plugs easily and I could get deeper ones but if the plugger is that deep, and as it rotates out of it's hole, it starts to tear the ground because of it's arc...it almost seems that in order for ANY aerator to get clean 4-5" plugs the plugger would need to almost rise up a bit like the PLUGR aerators do by puncturing the ground instead of arcing through it. OR was the soil so moist that it tears but drier soil might not........any opinions?
