Advice on planting these
Hey guys
I bought two Emerald Green Arborvitae http://www.aboutarborvitae.com/emera...borvitae.shtml And will be planting tomorrow but before I do I wanted to get your advice. I need them to grow as if they were literally on viagra ![]() They are small, 10" high and were only $7 each at Lowes so I know I don't want to burry them in fertilizer yet so what you recomend? Triple 10?

Kirk,
How fast is how fast? You are not going to make these trees grow any faster than they are willing....fertilizers added. The trees in your photo link is probably 20+ years old. This species grows fast but what is fast to a tree? Ask the Oak and the Cedar!

I'm putting each of the two on the side of the house to block out the neighbors "street light"??? Yes, that neighbor, and my parents bedrooms never see dark. The windows are about 8 feet off the ground so need to get 10 to 12 feet at least before they do any good and are in direct path between the street light and the window. I chose the evergreen that way it will block the light all year and not just in the summer. So, plant as normal don't try to make them grow any faster won't help. By the way, took a look at that link again and don't want them to get that big, I'll top them when they get say 15 to 20 feet because they are going 4 feet out from the foundation of the house.

The arborvitae is meant to be left alone and planted in a proper site. Kirk if you allow these things quite some years to get big enough to block a street light, then top the things off, you will ensue their demise. Have you even topped off a pine tree? The thing dies within a year or two from resin duct loss. All of these types of evergreen's with resin duct production will result in sap disease and or vigor loss.

Move them further away from the house. Dig a big ugly hole.

So you sure about this Think Green? I'm watching the sun now, that ticket which came with it said 6 hours of sun and I might have no other choice but to move them out further for that reason but due to the height of the street light, the further I go away from the windows the longer its going to take to shade the window? However the ticket also says 4' wide so I'll have plenty of room if I put them where I want but as I said, it all depends on the sun as this is a shady area. Right now, good 3 years before they do any good. Further away we'll 5 to 6 years and I doubt they get big enough to shade the whole window so I'm between a rock and a hard place there Duekster. ![]() And hey, she's 75 years old and an alcoholic with Bi-Polar so how much longer can the old witch last ![]() I know that sounds cruel but after 13 years now of this crap back and forth just gets old. Been pretty quiet now since the fence went up so knock on wood it stays this way. The street light lights up the whole neighborhood, I mean neighbors 4 and 5 houses up the road and down even have to plant tree's to shade the light. Mom and dad have plastic venetian blinds on the windows inside so that does the trick however when its cool and you want to sleep with the windows open, its a problem.

Hey, don't kid about that my mom had done called the electric company to see if anything could be done like a metal frame on one side so the light wouldn't travel and when they said no and the neighbor pays for it she can have it where she wants?
My mom said I have a .22 cal ![]() She was told the call was being recorded and if anything happened to that light the cops would be coming to her first ![]() But that was years ago

Do not use a 22
Main thing again on your hole is nice and wide... make an ugly hole with ragged sides. I would not fertilize until fall of next year. I would use plenty of super thrive in terms of frequency not strenght. |

Thats what I was going to use I'll have some pics this afternoon, I'm taking pictures at different times during the day to see how long I have sun there since it is a clear day here for a change and I have stakes up out away from the house and up close to the house in a direct path between the light and the window. Right now, off to the turnip green patch ![]() Going to put up about 5 bags today
