Scag Turf Tiger
So I dont high jack a thread here is my question. I have the 31 EFI Kohler right now. I am looking at possibly getting a Turf Tiger with the 28hp Cat Diesel or the 35 big block Vanguard. Anyone use these mowers? Is one better than the other? Is the power the same? I was wondering what the fuel consumption is like on both these. Torque I think is the same or close 53 on Briggs and 54 Cat but I have hear conflicting reports on what the Torque is these motors. Any info can help.

The vanguard will use a lot more fuel but will come in considerably cheaper.

Yeah I know that but is that really an issue? Is power equal on the two or does one have more than the other?

I get bid assist and am looking at some demo units so that is not a huge concern for me.

Just bought a brand new Turf Tiger with big block Vanguard. Best engine I have ever ran. Incredible power and torque. I tried out a diesel also and it had about the same power. Couldnt notice too big of a difference. However, I went with the Vanguard simply because of price and the convenience of not having to haul extra regular gas and diese fuel with me everyday. Mine chugs gas though. Run it side by side with my John Deere Z925 all day and my JD can mow almost mow twice as long as the Scag on one tank of gas. I would still choose it any day of the week over any other mower. Great mower

Why are you wanting to get away from the 31 Kohler?

Quote:
The Cat powered mower could not maintain its high end operating rpms, it had to be run virtually as slow as possible to keep from killing the engine, whereas the Generac never slowed. I mean it was sad to see what was an expensive Cat diesel had to offer in comparison to the big block Generac. You only need to demo the Cat and Vanguard on the same deck to see the difference for yourself. The 4 cylinder 35 hp Cat is a totally different engine, much smoother operation, and power far beyond that of the smaller 3 cylinder. If you demo the 28 Cat and 35 Vanguard on weekly cut grass, you will not notice much of a power slump with the diesel, but if you get into thick large grass, or large damp grass, you will see the difference immediately.
