Well I dont know any cheap mowers
I own 11 Dixie Choppers since 1985 Still have 9 out of the 11
To me there nothing compares to one I demo all big names mowers
Few things did like on some but when it came down to comfort Nothing rides better then my DC does
Now Im talking about DC 2011 and older models There new lines I dont like
The model I like they stop making it. So if I buy another new one might be different brand or re build what I got

And other owners don't "get up in arms" as you put it when someone (usually with no personal experience with the brand) dogs their brand of mower out?

We all defend our reasons for purchasing what we purchased...it's just that for some reason everyone that owns anything but a Bad Boy is justified....but the BB owners aren't.
If you paid attention instead of playing silly games you'd know that.

Demo all the mowers your interested in. Look at how they are built and thought out. A couple will stand out and make your decision easier. Only took me 3 months!!

Classic with manual blade engagement and manual deck lift
My last mower I bought this spring was a new 2011 model 3372
It has manual Lift with the PTO clutch button at least it had manual lift
I have 2 3372 with PTO and I have more problems with PTO belts breaking then any of my manual ones

I'll give some more advice to the OP You need to spend money to make money

For the money Snapper Pro. Same ICD deck and most parts as the Ferris without the suspension and half the price!

Might sound funny but don't overlook Big Dog - commercial grade and inexpensive. Been very happy with mine after using ExMarks and prices kept rising. Also made in the USA.
