3 1/4 inches I usually cut at 3 but this yard the grass is pretty thin

That's how trees are supposed to be planted on a property like this. It makes it much more natural than a symetrical or straight-line planting. Looks a hell of a lot better too.

Yea and I'm the one that planted them, LOL
