Thinking about that, I agree. It would only be for the first few. In my case I really don't have a good idea how long it will take. The more I think about it, the less sure I am. So if I do it this fall, and write it off for 'market research, I can make a better bid. My advatage on this job. The guy who has it now is driving from 40 km away (25 miles) That's gotta hurt for a 200-300 buck job.

Additions I'd do now with a bit of thought:

1. I wouldn't do it free, but at a loss leader. People who want free stuff, seldom buy.

2. Part of the deal is a sign on their lawn: This lawn was mowed by (Name + Logo) Yours can be too. (Telephone number) The sign is up for only a few days (while the cut looks really good.)

3. You follow up 48 hours later with a flyer delivered to the rest of the houses on the block, possibly further. Could do this at the time of the visit, but ideally you want to give time for the sign to be noticed first.

Hopefully the end result is that you get a bunch of contracts in a tight clump.
