Mounting engine to roller pump..help
I'm buying a new Honda GC160 horizontal shaft from Tractor Supply to pair with a roller pump. Here's my question... to keep from buying the 6:1 gear reduction box, can I just buy a pulley for the engine pto shaft and a pulley for the roller pump pto shaft? If so, what size pulleys do I need? Any tips or suggestions on what to use for the engine/pump base plate?

Pulley Gear Down has the smaller pulley on the drive and a larger one on the Pump. The way you calculate reduction is by the Different Circumference of the two Pulleys. Which is a direct correlation to the Diameter. Therefore your math is simple because you only are dealing with Diameter. I would start by finding the smallest Pulley that fits my Engine. Then work my math Back wards the find what diameter Pulley I need to be 6 times slower. .

Do you mean there are some roller pumps that don't require a gear reduction system if paired with a small enough engine? If there is, what engine and pump do I need?

Ric and I have often dis-agreed with each other on pump stuff that is run by tractor--It because we both had to deal with this stuff as nothing else was available. On this we agree. Most roller pumps run at 600-650 rpm as dictated by the tractor PTO. Some even have a 640 indicator. About the smallest engine with a governor is about a 5HP. The RPM are set. Start with the smallest pulley on your engine, put a chalk mark on it and use a timing light just as you would on a car engine. It will tell you the RPMs. Then hook a larger pulley to your pump. It's going to be trial and error maybe with a 2" pulley on the motor and a 4" on the pump. Most Hypro Rollers have about an 1" shaft but check the web site or just call Hypro and talk with a tech. They are great to help. They might even be able to tell you everything you need. Good Luck, but it can be done. You know the easiest thing to do is just buy the reduction gear already on the Honda pump from Northern Tools. I don't think that it is about $150 over the Non-Reduction Honda.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've decided to buy a Honda GC 160 (non-reduction) for $199 from Tractor Supply and order a Hypro D252GRGI from Rittenhouse for $538. It has the gear reduction on it and bolts right up to the engine. For about $750 I'll have a new engine and new diaphram pump. I decided to go with the diaphram in case I get into wettable powders later on. I used to own a space saver that had the Kaw and D403 on it too, and I liked that setup. The D252 is so much cheaper than the D403 though, so I think I found my "happy medium" with it. Thanks again. Now if I can just find a good deal on a hose reel for 1/2 x 300ft of hose...

YEP MY BAD. You are right I only answered the question of how to do a 1 to 6 reduction Pulley. The real question is how to engineer a Roller Pump to a Honda engine. What I missed asking was the HP of the engine and the Horse power requirement and RPM of the Pump. BTW most PTO I am familar with are rated at 540 RPM. .

Somee hypro roller pump has a 6 -1 gear reduction unit built in. Available at tractor supply. The cheap one starts at 119.00 in lakeland. Others go up. The cheap one will run with chemicals about a year before it freezes up. I think the model number is 4301. Call hypro. Get a woodsman coupler from motion industries ( has a hard rubber gear so u don't destroy the engine when it freezes) any motor will work as long as the rpms are less than 3600 rpm's. The woodsman coupler u can match any size shaft and the unit is about 26.00. I ran mine like that but changed out fir a delavan fat boy 12v electric. I don't know why this is so hard without viagra
