Seed without preparation

Pennington Sun and Shade seed (64 percent perennial rye) was sown on top of a poor crabgrass infested lawn...on September 27, 2012. Plots were 3 by 3 feet. Markers are in the lower left corner. Temp was 63. There was no soil preparation at all. No starter fert. Light frost occurred about mid October. Area was a mowed, vacant lot, no irrigation or other care. Weather was cool with light rain followed by heavy rain in the next month. First photo had about 21 pounds, and second photo had about 7 pounds per thousand sqft. Photo at 27 days after sowing.
