Taelwind, is the engine running rich enough to foul the plug ?
The Briggs OHV singles had a bunch of cam issues, worn lobes, broken ACRs, gears that come loose from the shaft. Check your valve adjustments .

My apologies for the rant.....I have no appetite for mindless BS when troubleshooting an engine.

That contributes to the solution, but it may not fix the problem either.

I pulled the carb and intake off to see if I could see any problems. I did not. So I took a second look at the carb float, it has no leaks. The valves appeared to be adjusted but since somebody suggested this might be the problem - remember, original problem was not compression, runs but sucks lots of gas and even spits some gas back out the intake - The valves were not adjusted correctly. Adjusting the intake valve got me some compression, adjusting the exhaust valve got me more. The engine is now hard to turn by hand and has good compression.



Thanks to everybody who helped me out. My battery drained cause I left the key on. It is now charging, the intake is back on, along with the filter and cover. After battery charges, I will see if mower starts and runs.

The guy just rebuilt the carburetor, which means he removed, and re-installed it.
Thus it is possible that a small air leak could have worked itself in, maybe a gasket didn't seat correctly, perhaps somehow the carburetor did not get re-installed the way it should have been, and it is a likely cause of the malfunction, I never said it was the cause of the problem, I said it was a possibility.
Air leaks DO include vacuum lines!

The other possibilities are being, will be, or have been covered.
I am not interested in discussing those, I am discussing the fact that the carburetor rebuild was likely the source of the problem.

On that note, a new carburetor and gasket set might likely fix things as well.

Should be self explanatory...it's behind the throttle butterfly. But what a cool and cheap way of increasing horsepower...just loosen intake manifold bolts and cut all vac lines...on an automobile the largest increase in power could come from the brake booster vac line...gobbs of power and no brakes is how I roll!

Guess what, more than likely that is where the trouble lies and I say that because in my experience, many rebuilds don't work.

In the future I'll be glad to come in like an ignorant bvttfart and call people names and telling them they are stupid,
seeing how it sure looks like some folks would prefer that.
But for now I thought I would use tact, I suppose you are right that I was stupid in that regard.

Either the kit, the rebuild, or something with the carburetor installation didn't go right.

I say that because in my experience, so many rebuilds don't work out that it's as easy to replace the entire carburetor with a new one, and for that to happen, the PRESENT carb needs to come OFF!
Which is accomplished by looking for intake leaks!

And more than likely that is where the trouble is, that carburetor needs to be pulled, thrown out, and a new one put on.
At least that is what I would have done.

But it costs MONEY to do that, MONEY the guy was NOT willing to spend because if he HAD been willing to SPEND it he would have already bought a NEW ONE! You GET THAT?!
So I was trying to put it to the man GENTLY!

And for any of that to happen the carburetor needs to come off.
