It's true: You get what you pay for!!!
Hope you all are doing well, it's hard to believe the season is about to end.
If you could give me just a small piece of advice for the following, i'd appreciate it. I bought a used Toro snowblower, 621r (model 38451) to be ready for the bad snow I think we'll get this year. This is for personal use only...... We ran it at the previous owners and it seemed fine, so I purchased it and did what I would always do: New Oil, New Spark Plug, and fresh gas. Gas and Oil was no problem, took the shroud off to get to the plug and noticed something odd....the plug was standing tall. I pull off the plug wire and noticed it was barely in with a few threads screwed into the head. One or two turns of the wrench and it's out. It appears it's a tight fit to properly thread the plug in, so previous owner must have cross threaded it at a very bad angle. There is a chunk broke off the edge of the spark plug hole. I understand buyer beware, but did contact the seller who seemed surprized but did not offer to refund my money. Again, the perils of Craigslist-caveat emptor... I removed the head, my plans are to have it repaired by a welding shop and then the hole rethreaded with thread inserts and reinstall the head. Hopefully it works and all is good. Now my question: what torque would you recommend I torque the head bolts to? If I can get a season or two out of this I will be happy. I live in Indianapolis, we don't get a lot of snow or very often, but will want it to work. Thanks for reading volume one of my snowblower woes.....I appreciate any suggestions you might be able to share. Thanks and be safe, SteveG |

Give a Toro dealer a call or stop by--they should be able to supply torque specs. There are three Toro dealers that I recall--Lyndhurst and Henthorns on the west side and Castleton Outdoor Solutions around I-69 and 82nd.
I could give you a ballpark figure but the parts list indicates that the engine is by Toro and I no longer have access to specs. Possibly a Toro tech will chime in as well. I"m just guessing that the engine is a Chinese Honda clone but I could be wrong--I didn't look at the engine closely in the parts breakdown. |

Dutch, thank you for your reply. I have talked to Henthorns already and they were going to try to find as we'll. they are great by the way!!!!
I will get the head welded and have them install a heli coil or thread Sert. Hopefully have the specs by then. I'd really prefer to replace the head, but the Chinese engines don't have this as a replacement part avail that I'm aware of. Will keep looking though. If it's a chinese honda clone, a honda head may fit it, never tried it, but if you have a honda laying around, ...

Did you check a price on a new head from Toro? Might be cheaper than all the work put into the old one. Just a thought. Some of that chinese stuff is rock bottom cheap.

Unfortunately, by looking at the parts breakdown, it does not appear that Toro sells that part individually. I do have an email to Toro support, but I'm not feeling real good about it. I do have an email requesting the ability to purchase they had directly through Toro customer support, but I'm not feeling good about that.
I'm actually even looking through eBay to see if I can find a short block or something like that to bullethead off of. This is precisely the reason why I am hesitant buying anything that comes from China, I know they've come along way, can't imagine needing parts for this in 30 years like I could do for some of the old Wheelhorse, Toro, Ariens, etc. Live and Learn!!! Thanks again for the suggestion, if anyone else has suggestions, I really appreciate them! Posted via Mobile Device |

The engines that Harbor Freight sells are the Chonda's (Chinese honda)
