what is the most important thing a homeowner can do

Wondering what you try to push to the customer's that they can do on their end to keep the lawn looking the best.

I try to get them to ....

- mow at the correct height and frequency(hopefully by me)
- for the small number of fescue lawns I have I really push the importance of irrigation twice a day after seeding. I feel my customers don't do this and therefore the lawn suffers. Many of my customers don't have irrigation or are elderly and unable to move a sprinkler around
- ask me questions when something doesn't look right.

What else do you try to push? How do you pass the importance of this information on?

I would think the mowing height would be the biggest thing.

they say i got it at 3inchs yea the 3rd notch up on the mower deck

Only got 1 costumer that has a sprinkler system and i finely got him to water the correct amount of time. 15 min every day was not enough

I lost over 6 grand this season during this drought.
All I want for my nonirrigated lawns to do is get watered. I don't mean once a week or twice a week.
when the ground cracks open a half an inch.....water.
If you cannot afford the extra water bill, then you cannot afford lawn treatments and expect miracles.
Other than this.......pay me on time and water. I don't really worry about the heights of cutting as long as i can fert and squirt.

Deliberate, slow mowing with a sharp blade at a specific height and proper trimming and edging.

In my opinion, deliberate mowing and trimming is equally as important if not more so than watering.

Most years adequate rains will provide enough moisture to do well 75% of the year at least.

Shitty mowing will always be shitty mowing.

Some good points here on trimming i always love the foks that weed eat to the dirt or use round-up along any thing that needs trimed

If the grass is mowed at 3in than why not the trimming to

I call it "follow through" Charles. Proper mowing and trimming doesn't even take any more time than doing a poor job.

People just don't follow through and finish. It really makes the lawn look nicer and kept. I regularly thank the customers who do a good job telling them what they do means everything. I tell them I just feed the lawn and spray a weed now and then.

What the homeowner does and doesn't do can make or break the lawn. Period.

But honestly it boils down to Mowing, trimming and low on the abuse I.E: dogs, kids etc.

I've been doing this a long time, and the key to good turf is proper mowing. The number one destroyer of quality turf I've seen is low mowing. If a customer will mow high and frequent, it makes our job much easier. I always tell the customers they have the most important job in having quality turf.

yup i agree mowing and then watering,several yrs ago
i wrote up some guidelines, designed a 2 sided flyer and had em printed up,
i leave them with the lawn treatment slips--- im sure most just hit the can, but i often outright ask new customers to please read and stress that any treatments i might make or offer are only 1/3 of the equation to success the other 2/3 are mowing and watering which is their responsibility (regardless if they hire out the mowing)
