Starter problems with a 2000 GMC one ton
I have 2000 GMC 3500 4x4 5.7 Vortech and it has a starter problem...it grinds really really bad and sometimes it locks up and it won't even turn over. We loosen the bolts, take starter off and then put it back on. this then will work one or two times and it then it starts grinding really bad again and again. I have put 14 starters on it in a year a new flywheel that didn't fix it's. Now it still grinds really really bad so I put a new engine in the truck and it that didn't work. So now I'm now on two starters on a new engine still has the i dont want to start attitude! So my question is....has anybody had this problem and how did you fix it!

Some starters need to be shimed so it has the proper gear clearance. Sounds like yours is tight

I've tried shams no matter which size you use it just makes it worse and the gears on all the starter are all chewed up it's even broke some of the nose cones on the starter and the gears and the flywheel was so chewed up the teeth from the starter couldn't even touch it I've had three mechanics look at it and they are all stumped I even had the gm dealer look at it and they can't figure it out

The truck only has 95,000 miles on it and it's only got 1500 to 2000 miles on the new engine and my grandpa bought me the truck new and he's no longer with us so I really don't want to sell the truck or traded it in I've always took good care of it I started to have a problem with the year ago I just wanted fixed

Ok When you start the truck the starter grinds it sounds like the starter is not aligned right with the flywheel it's like you loosen the bolts on the starter and you turn it over... Does that make sense

Causes. Shim starter, bad solenoid, bad gears. Improper voltage to starter solenoid, and or starter. Not gnded properly
