Older Walk Behind worthit or not??

I found this mower for sale from a guy using it to mow his yard in the city. He wants to sell it to me for $400 and it runs and cuts good. I am not real knowledgeable about walk behind mowers yet but want to add one to my equipment without taking out a loan. It is an exmark metro with a 48" deck. Does anybody know what year this may be? All the new Exmarks are red but he painted it years ago. Do you think it is worth $400? Has anyone ever owned or used one of these? Thanks for any help.

Take some one along to look at it that is knowledgeable about those machines if you can. The price isn't bad, but if the machine breaks down on you, what kind of expense will you need to incur to get it moving again. Also, I assume he did not use it as often as you will be using it. That being the case, buyer beware.

Thanks for the points you guys brought up. I am going to look at it next week and take it for a test. I will check the transmission and engine carefully.

The payment on my new exmark 36" hydro is $104/ month so a new 48" belt drive should be about the same price. That sulky is over $300 new and you can get $100-$150 for it all day every day. so if you pay $400 asking price you need it to last 3 months to break even.
I would jump on that deal, tell him you want it to be cold when you try it. you should be able to start it in two pulls with the choke on. start it- get it hot, I mean really operating temp.- stop it and let it sit for 5 minutes in this season and try to start it again.
Dont be afraid if it has a little "puff" of smoke when it first starts, but run if it continues to smoke.
If you can get it for less, do it, but don't let it be a deal breaker.
Good luck!! let us know what happens.

P.s-

I'm noticing that there seems to not be much adjustment available up front so make sure you can live with that.

All good points. I did notice the adjustability up front is limited at the wheels. I think I will buy it might even be able to get it a little cheaper.

Can you work on mowers? If so it would be fine but if you can't it will be a money pit going to the dealer.
