Kohler CH25S Exmark Lazer Z.

Condition,,,Started hearing a slight click in this engine in July..not quite a knockfrom a rod..or a tick from a lifter...
As a knocking rod in a Command twin is rare...they break but dont knock...and it being a sideshaft engine..I knew it was a crank/cam gear noise...
This NEVER happens on a Verticle Command Twin..
I pulled my boss aside in Sept.and had him listen to the noise...explaining what was going to eventually happen to the engine,,,Right Again..

The engine stopped running Tuesday...gear cracked after almost 6 months of constant chatter with the cam gear..

You dont have to Name The Failure,,,because I did it for you...

Piston Slapper, we had the same thing happen on a CH23 under warranty. Engine had about 1000 hours on it. Kohler rep was called and he blamed us not using Kohler oil and Kohler oil filters. After a long battle, they warranted it.
What do you believe is the cause of this type of failure?

Eric

The failure is a combination of excessive side load...belt too tight...and either a poor quality of oil or filthy oil for extended periods...

The sump bushing gets worn..
The crank/cam gears no longer mesh properly...clicking noise...
A few months later ...crank gear cracks loose from the crankshaft..
Engine stops....lots of phone calls.....

Thanks Piston Slapper so much for the reply. We could not get a definitive answer as to why the gear broke despite the fact that we were able to prove that we used Kendall oil and Wix oil filters exclusively.
We change the oil and filter every two weeks so I do not believe that it was neglect on our part. We have eight Walkers with either the Ch20 or Ch23 and never had a failure like that. We routinely get between five and six thousand hours out of the Kohler CH engine with no major repairs.
Are you partial to Kohler oil and Kohler filters?

There is no 1 answer for gear failures...
Improperly shimmed camshaft or a defective engine sump can also cause the same issue...

The only aftermarket oil filter I would suggest for Kohler is FRAM PH3614....period.
I have a customer that has used them exclusively on his fleet of mowers for going on 15 years..
Never had an oil related problem....enuf said,...
My advice is,,,if its under warranty...use factory stuff...
