Engine.....Briggs 14.5 Intek verticle

Condition...Went to crank the mower and the battery was dead...
Replaced the battery...now the starter spins good...but the gear doesn't engage the flywheel..
Replaced the starter...the same thing happens...starter spins but the gear won't turn the flywheel..
Took the starter back to the dealer ...they bolted it to an engine and it worked fine..

Name That Failure...

A)...magnetic vortex inductance is weak..
B)...mismarked battery..positive and negative reversed..
C)....bad flywheel ring gear...
D)...chunk of meteorite lodged under the deck...
E)....wrong starter....
F)....some of the above...

The answer is clear as Day! It must be a defective Flux Capacitor!

You might B right....
I've seen 2 brand new batteries...10 years apart...that the cases were marked wrong...
On a side note...a little known fact...if a battery is discharged low enough...it can flip polarity...

Just a follow up...
As little as the sump bushing was worn...the PTO bushing was grooved..
Hindsight tells me that the engine was run low on oil ...or with filthy oil for an extended period.
The engine...being on a Lazer Z...has belt tension on both ends of the crank..
The lack of lubrication allowed the crank to eat into the bushings...causing the gears to be misaligned..eventually cracking the crankgear loose..

thats a good indicator of what happens when you dont change your oil... my rule is this "if it looks dirty change it" on my personal equipment i change it once and run it a few hours then change it again, then every 50 hrs., in my backhoe i change it once a year, in the nissan diesel forklift with the sd33 engine i got it for $8000 8 years ago, it must be built of gold, i have never changed the oil because i wanted it to blow up so i can rebuild, it still hasnt and i run it in lots of dust with the pedal to the floor (bet it doesn't do 10mph). I just let it sit 20 min to warm up and use it, use ether to start it whenever its cold (which is supposed to blow piston rings). its a 1971 and it smokes a lot to start it up and hard to start but other than that it runs beautifully, almost no blowby and thats what i call a "real" engine. To this day it runs perfect other than hard starting, use a can of ether it wont hurt it. You do anything i do to this sd33 nissan to a newer engine itll blow up within a week. Wish things were still made like that, sadly the good old days are gone to new emission and plastic garbage.

Cubby....why would you want to blow up a bulletproof engine...
Just so you can rebuild it ????...IF there is anything left to rebuild..??

the main reason i wanted to blow it up is that when i got it it smoked a lot whenever you started it, glowplugs shot, injectors weren't right, the oil was water and soot. So i figured id blow it up eventually because i wanted to have a reason to make it better. But i couldn't so now i just use it to use it. But since the injectors are bad, glow plugs dont work , and it had thousands of hrs. i will probably rebuild it in a few years along with the tranny because when its cold you have to floor it to get it into gear. Im not the only one who uses it hard infact the other guys who used it a few years ago used it the worst. They didn't ever let it warm up, they squirt ether in it till it starts up with the pedal to the floor on a dead cold start as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. But i properly instructed them after they kept doing it to start it with a few squirts of either (not the whole can) at idle, then let it warm up for 10 min. What i am currently doing now is building a Kawasaki prairie 730 race quad with a 730 bkp kit.

I admit it...blowing up engines can be fun...
I had a snapper with an 8 hp briggs that had a knock ...so I decided to blow it up...
Drained the oil and ran it at WOT...ran another half hour ..then it locked up...
Freed up the crank with a pipewrench...cranked right up...and knocked for another 20 minutes...
