check out my site.

OK, you guys.
I'm doing this site on homestead.com, and it's only costing me $7/ month including the domain name.
I just changed my site to include construction,so I could start building on that.

I had many compliments before the change, including a new account starting in January that said: "we were going to call around for other bids, but then went to your website and decided to just have you do it."

I changed the homepage,and added a couple pages. included links to pages within the site, and experimenting with curved reveal on the "design" page.

I'm hoping, in the near future, to have a contact link on every page to my contact page.

I had to cut my work short due to many bugs in the sitebuilder program that has caused me to have to save my work every 5 words, and to contact tech support many times the last couple weeks, so I'm done for now-going with a site that i can be content with for a short time while I get my frustration back in control.

also, Yes, the picture on the HP for design (which is out of house for now) is off google images until i have a larger body of work


any suggestions are appreciated.

Since you're a work in progress and recognize you need to add contact info to each page (not just a link to the Contact page), I'll hit some other key areas of need...

I haven't looked at a Homestead.com site in quite a while, but in a look at their code, I would rank them quite low (inline styling, in this day and age, is not the best way to go).

In a couple of searches, you share duplicate content with another site or two. One is in your area (given the identical "Proudly servings..." list), so it seems someone is borrowing someone else's writing.

Fonts: The bright white on brown is a bit difficult to read (in fact, I'm struggling to actually read the site due to this). Sometimes white fonts work, sometimes they don't. In this instance, I don't think it works well.

You might want to increase the font size from 13px to 14px and the line height from 16 to 18. Definitely helps with the readability. Also, watch for paragraph spacing. Some don't have line breaks between them, such as at the top of the maintenance page. You'll definitely want to apply these suggestions to the testimonials page.

Watch for font use consistency. You seems to change from arial to times new roman, and bold/not bold.

It would look more professional to use your domain name for you email and not comcast's.

Links in Content: I think I moused over everything underlined/accentuated in the content of your pages, but I don't see that any of them are links. Now that I reread your note, I see that there are pages I missed. The home page pics seem to be the only links to some of the main content of your site. I now see the parenthetical mention to click the pics to find out more. If you have to explain to someone how to navigate, this means there are clearly better ways to lead people through your site. Another issue is that, if I then reflexively mouse over the text on the pics, the words Design, Build, Maintain" are not linked.

Design Page: Unless I know what I'm looking at...I don't really know what I'm looking at. Adding context to pics will help search engines and your potential customers.

Patio Paver page is a great example of pictures and written context. Well done. You vary on your font use again, this time with the content all in bold.

Watch out for typos. I'm finding several. ("Despithe" on the Paver page, "recieve" on the Services page)

Maintenance Pics page needs contextual content.

I see the "reveal" on the design page, but I don't know what it's really adding. To me, it's an example of using Flash for Flash's sake as the revealed pic is nothing different than the other pics on the page.

The Contact Us image of the hand really doesn't fit the visual aesthetics of the other components.

SEO-wise, there seems to be no real basic implementation of the standard. Page TITLEs could stand to be rewritten, with H tags, meta descriptions, etc needing to be utilized as well. There are links to a couple of good resources in the Tri-City review thread.

Questions or clarifications, just yell.

Awesome,thank you for your in depth analysis.

First, I purposely neglected the contact info on each page except the actual contact page. I have specific data I want people to guide towards, and when I had my phone# on the home page, they wouldn't go past it. and the instruction is for mobile- when I looked on my ipad, i noticed there is no indication that you can click it. I did not, however, know that underlined words were supposed to link, and when I tried to link the design- build -maintain to a page I just couldn't figure it out. so this is where I felt I could publish the site and stop pulling my hair out.

The "proudly servicing" is for the sake of the search engines and I listed every thing I could think of. and the reveal is, as I said, just experimenting with it, and is for the sake of trying it out....... is that flash?.

but I will definitely "pick a font" and figure out where the spell check is.
underlining is to make a point but I guess I should let the reader decide what is relevant info.

definitely a good idea.

homestead is usually easy to do basic stuff, and I would normally recommend them to someone on a budget like I am, but they are updating their site and it has a lot of bugs in the new format so that I was typing 3 words and saving and on the phone all weekend with tech.

I am this close to chunkin the money for a pro site builder, but if I can get my spelling and structure together it can be real good.
I'm not a website/ computer guy so you may have to "dumb it down" for me a bit in the future. I'll post again when I fix the font/structure, thanks again.

I know how to change font size,(not sure about px)but how do I change the spacing?, I'll look into it on a google search, but if you have a simple answer...

While I get what you're trying to do (and disagree with it), I don't see where there's any marketing/informational funnel that would match the premise you seem to be operating under.

Underlined words can either link or not. It's more an issue of their consistency on one site or another. When I point out the issue of the words on the home page overlaying the pictures that you're using for navigation, I'm saying that, when I attempt to click the picture as instructed, it is a link. If I try to click the text you have overlaying it (design, build, maintain), those are not linked, therefore causing a visitor to potentially miss that there is anything linked at all.

To clarify, I was pointing out that your site, and two other sites, feature the exact same content. By this, I mean three sites have content that was either borrowed/stolen/copied/whatever. Google frowns on duplicate content. I specifically point out the "proudly servicing" because another local company uses that exact same wording and list, as you are. That other site also has the paragraph or two that I checked on your site on their's. Google "duplicate content" for more info.

I think you're thinking I'm referring to "flashy", whereas I'm referring to "Flash", the animation technology that relies on a plugin. When you load that page on your iPad, do you see that reveal?

There is no problem with underlining points. I prefer them to be bold, but that's because I also use underlined links. You mentioned you had links within your content. I didn't actually find any, so if they're underlined like your other text, I could have missed them for this reason.

......I agree completely, when I tried to do that it did not work, and in fact, turned the words into a lime green, so I'm still working on it.- as I mentioned, the site i'm using to build it has a lot of bugs in their recently updated version, so hopefully i'll have it sorted soon. in fact I changed a lot of the font and underlines you mentioned, but could not on some pages- will try word pad and pasting.

2) we CRUSH our competitors in....
3) we work as unto the lord in....... ...and as unto ourselves in other areas.

There are two kinds of people who will view my ad. The ones who will say "oh, this site looks nice"...and the other who will notice the syntax, and font sizes, layout etc... and and pick it apart for that reason and miss the fact that we do good work.
Unfortunately, the latter tends to be the more educated, with disposable income so I really need to gear the site towards them, so I really appreciate your insight. feel free to check out the site later in the week and see what changes I may have made by then. I would do it today, but I had a full weekend of it and need to de-stress with different work lol

update

frustrating......The site wouldn't let me change the font in "proudly servicing, but I did come up with a different line.

I changed the design-build-maintain to be linked, but it changed the color to puke green (although, I did not think to preview it- maybe not like that on actual viewed page?) and wouldn't let me fix it so I did not save it.
looks like tech support again.

You could use some work in the meta tag description, title tag description and a quick look at the site page source I didn't see any "keywords" for the site. You may want to look into adding these things to help with your search result.

I've done that on some, but forgot to do it on some.
hopefully I can get it done over the next month.

Tony: was online with tech and they said the color change on linked text was normal so I flipped two pics around so text would stand out more.....does it look too bad?

I think you're missing the reason why I'm pointing this out. You and a (apparently) local competitor feature some of the exact same wording on your web site. Ie, copy and pasted from one to the other. I'm pointing out that either you or your competitor took content straight from one another's site. If I originally wrote the content, I'd be bothered by this. If you read the Gold Leaf review thread, the subject of duplicate content is addressed.
