RB 1800's installed correctly will not stick if newer than 15 years. The older one the wiper seal was made of a different material that appears to degrade and they will leak and stick pretty common, I just usally replace the cap on them and good to go. I see more Hunters leaking from the wiper seal than anything, but the majority of Hunter in my market area is installed by crews who do not care nor know any better. I have been experiencing RB caps loosing. I have mainly seen this on 12" but I belive thats because they are in beds and left a few inch above ground to where it is visible. If I were to dig up a lot of my 4" I would suspect some leaking caps from them too. I have been instructing my guys when they thread the barbs in, to ensure the cap in screwed down tight. Bottom line, both are a comparable product and if RB did a test video the tables would probally be turned.

I'm sure that it will not do very well for the riser seal either. Clean the stem and the riser seal with water and make sure there is no sand in there. If either the seal or the stem are scored then replace them and make sure that the head is set to the proper grade.

I am a self professed village idiot, but isn't PVC petroleum based?

The Rainbird 1804 and Hunter PRS40 are both at the top of the list for this style of sprinkler head. They are comparable in quality to each other, but there will always be failures. It will depend on proper installation, and who was working the assembly line at beer:30 on a Friday afternoon. Can't go wrong using either product.

I'm not sure what the RB risers are made of, also the wiper seals, but I've been using it for 25 years in new installs where we had sticking riser problems. All the sites were in beachfront/sandbased soils. I would have noticed failures, never did. I use WD-40 all over the motor home, which has ABS fairings and vinyl and rubber trim strips. The only thing I could add to this dead horse thread, is we did have problems with the RB risers not ratcheting, some were smooth, some not, go figure.

Spray it and take the chance that it might cut the lifespan , or dont spray , have it stick , get broken and need to be replaced anyways.
Kinda like not giving cancer patiants pain meds because your worried about them getting addicted.
