When i started, i thought i'd be clever with some discounts, and it was a horrible experience. One lady would zero in on it, and tell me to not try to fool her. You've read the replies here; it's not a good move. You want respect. Keep the upper hand - no discounts. I can actually remember the sickening feeling of finishing a job and realizing that i wasn't going to get paid.
I agree with it not being attractive. I highly doubt it will bring in a grip of business. What business it does bring it would be using you regardless of the 10th free cut.
Small business LCO are not in the position to offer any type of freebies or coupons. The profit margin is already low enough for cutting grass. You don't have any other avenues to increase profit. Yes, you could upsale, but again, you could have most likely done that without giving away a free cut.
Places that offer freebies or major coupons usually have a way of still profiting and/or increasing profits substantially. McDonalds will occasionally offer something free which is usually something that costs almost pennies to produce. How many hungry people pull up to the drive through and only receive that one small item? Not many, as they are ordering other stuff like drinks, fries, meals for family/kids. Stores, restaurants, etc just want to get in the door so you spend money.
Think of the grocery stores that offer a free turkey after you spend so much money. They end up making more money (than normal) off of this scenario
