echo spray from air filter

My 265 trimmer needed a new carb I thought, so I did that, fuel lines, filter, air filter, intake gaskets, spacer. But it still runs the same. Barely half rpm at full throttle. I noticed gas spraying lightly out the air filter area when running with the air filter off. Thinking maybe motor shot? Or at least piston?

Carb are rarely the problem unless a part breaks. The biggest reason for bog is the carb needs to be adjusted. Two hidden screws on the 265. And if the unit has significant use check the spark screen and remove the muffler and check the port. Clean it out as needed.

thought the carb would have come within adjustment. Never done it. Where are the screws?

The carb. doesn't need adjustin'! Pull the muffler and clean the cylinder exh. port of carbon build up. You also wanna clean /discard the spark arrestor screen.

As fish said it is more likely the ports dirty unless this is a newer unit. Can't preset carb for all the conditions in the world. As these little engines wear you need to adjust between seasons to get best performance. And coming out of the epa test they are set so lean that it is a wonder that they start as good as they do.

I agree with Fish except clean and don't discard the screen. We have been seeing a lot of engine failures with one thing in common, missing screens, could be coincidence but new motors are not like the old ones that we could just mix 30wt oil with gas and they would run flawlessly, I'm just saying.

figured out you can just scrape around in there with a screw driver. Wow must have been a table spoon of build up in there. Runs good. too bad its 10 below out.

I see you already cleaned it.

Here's how I ( a highly trained professional! ) clean out the ports.

Pull the plug. A lot of times the plug will look perfect, so how can the port be clogged? He said.

Pull the muffler. Leave the carb alone/attached, no need to remove it.

Rotate the piston to BDC. Look in the port with a light.

Blow air into the cylinder thru the plug hole, the pressure will keep all the carbon scrapings out of the cyl and transfer ports. Don't go crazy with the air pressure, you could damage any reed valves, seals etc.

I use a serrated steak knife and or a small half round file, and scrape/drag the tools only on the outward pull, making sure you don't mess up the piston or gouge the plating. Important to keep the air flowing.
When done, take yer knife point and push against the ring/s ya should get a little bit of spring, if not moving at all, they might be stuck.
Check yer progress with a light.
