Will be licensed for herbicides shortly but stuck with backpack sprayer short-term..?

My state does allow limited non motorized Spraying So I'm looking mainly for operational tips for spot spraying as an add on for fertilization clients.

What I've noticed from last season was the very limited window of when herbicides could be used due to wind and rain. I run solo but this may change this year.

My plans is to do spraying early am when grass is too damp to mow from dew and time it just before mowing so the weeds are more obvious. I mainly focus on smaller lawns 1/3 or less.

I have seen numerous operators spot spray right after mowing....? What's your take on this practice?

I don't see anything wrong with spraying after mowing

I have sprayed lots of lawns after they were mowed and never had a problem

Look at the weeds most of the leaves are low in the grass and are not mowed off

There are some weeds that grow tall but most do not

Herbicides that are systemic, which many are must not be mowed for 3 or so days so the chemical can translocate through the plant. I really don't think a spot spray only approach will be very effective and will make you appear incompetent in the long run. No offense but you have a lot to learn before you offer spraying for hire. Keep reading and experiment & learn on your own or family lawns.

Yes I totally admit I do have much to learn in the.herbicide.realm. Not really sure if I will ever go past using a backpack sprayer for spot treatments.

Lots of owners started out with a backpack, Exact. Practice on cement with water until you can apply a smooth even pattern. Swing the arm is best, but opinions vary , some people prefer the wide area nozzle, or mini-boom. Then it is best to apply blanket weed control--because not all weeds are visible, it just does a better job. Learn how to apply at a half gallon per thousand. Carry less water. You can cover 8000 sqft per fill.

I started out backpack only. Learned after a year you cannot do that for very long. #1, only plan on doing 4k sq ft lawns or less. More than that, and you are doing way too much mixing and time wasting at a property. #2, a backpack will KILL your shoulders/back if done day in/day out.

I now backpack only the smallest of lawns and ride on the rest. Perhaps you want to look into one of those 12V push sprayers like TurfEx offers?

I’m thinking I’m probably not going to be advertising directly for weed control but as a package add on for fertilization clients and full lawn application clients. Essentially bundling it with fertilizer costs for the most part. For the weed dense lawns and new clients I will consider subbing out broadcast spraying...

The motorized electric push spreader just might be a good option.

Honestly I’m more concerned about the logistics of even having proper weather to spray period due to wind and rain. A seasoned application veteran near retirement age flat out admitted to me that if they followed strict rules for spraying by law. They would hardly spray here.
