It was black in the beginning and the logo looked nice but too small to read the slogan.

Thanks for that input. I just noticed in IE, it seems the menu dropped.
I am sure I broke something when adjusting the background color to a lighter shade and to more of a blue than gray.

That is the danger of making changes and not clearing and checking cache.
I also made a few changes to the php page templates.
