It is an additional tool for the tool box.

So along with this product is it recommended to spread compost over the yard once per year.

Other than spreading compost is there another way to put carbon back into the soil

Granular organic or organic-based fertilizer, mulch mowing leaves, humates

The compost of course, is a complete cycle all on its own, as it is food source AND microbes...
Microbes on their own,,, only consume OM until it is gone or unavailable... Typical OM in lawns, come from clippings, leaves, ephemeral pinecones are great, even twigs and other seed debris may be mulch mowed for additional OM... when the microbes from Holganix or any other source are added to SPEED decomp, you MAY eventually run out of natural lawn debris... Good question... Does adding CARBON in the form of,,, Humates, actually feed the Holganix micro-organisms??? I guess,,, No... I believe that if the Humates are in the soil the plant will use them in a way that does not provide N, when consumed by microbes... I could be wrong...

The question was about Carbon, not N.
New thread started about humates.

That is an Excellent Point...
![]() Consider this if you will: Since our ultimate goal is to CYCLE nutrients back in the soil, by use of Holganix,,, in order that, we may provide N for immediate use,,, Will Humates be processed by the Holganix Microbes into N??? My belief is that adding Carbon from sources, other that compost(or raw compost source material) would NOT necessarily give us N... This may be an 'Apples and Oranges' comparison... The question about OTHER sources of Carbon, arose as an Alternative to Compost... Again, I may have misunderstood the CONTEXT of the question, so clarification would be desirable...

While this website pertains to food crops, it also contains some good information regarding how different food sources effects C:N ratio, soil microbes and plant health. http://soils.usda.gov/sqi/management...ng_systems.pdf
