Veneer stone interior installation

Previously when installing veneer stone it was new construction and we installed cement board instead of drywall. For this one its drywall, paint, and wall paper. My question is can I pull off the paint and wall paper, install metal lath, scratch coat and then the veneer or do I need to pull off the drywall and install cement board?

Here is a job I just did on my office... I applied it directly to the painted drywall using a expensive tile adhesive (specifically for tiles on to be installed on the floor and walls). Dont know if this is up to construction spec, but I had to remove a couple tne next day... and the drywall came right with it. Before I installed the stone, I did screw probably 50 drywall screws through the drywall to secure it better to the studs so the weight of the stones did not rip the drywall away from the studs.


Dont mind the outlet... still need to make that look better.
Also if your going to install lath, then there is no need to remove the wall paper and paint
