Working a patio around window wells
anyone have pictures of jobs they have done? I'm designing a patio with 2 wells very prominently and evenly spaced along the side of a house. Ideally, I would put a french door in place of an existing window, make a nice stoop, and disguise the wells on either side with some planters or something but I don't think budget will allow.
Also, I cannot put a landscape bed there, they do not want it. the existing wells are concrete block with a brick cap and they are shot. I can replace with the plastic half circles but will probably build a nicer masonry replacement. I would just like to see how you guys have worked around them in the past. FYI, these are tiny 1'x2' basement windows, not big egress windows. Thanks RJ

Don't have pictures here but I have used curb stone and let it protrude about 3" around the windows to create a small well

We've had the patio flush to the opening and had a metal grate fabricated to sit flush w/ the patio. Clean look and no broken ankles

Hmmm i could handle making a grate with some cat walk material, then just get it galvanized or powdercoated. Making the well rectangular would keep this project pretty easy

Yeah, the one we did the house dated to the 1930s and had some cool ironwork details on it. We had the fabricator work those in, then powdercoated the grates black. It's one of the photos I regret not having snagged when I left that job.

We have done a few like this before. This one is galvanized but we have used aluminum grates as well. Also a picture of how we do the inside of the window wells. On higher end jobs where we have other flagstone or natural stone we will to 4" natural stone mortared usually with block or concrete behind.

That grate looks very functional, but boy does that look awful.

I agree its not fantastic looking but its also not the focal point. We have done some more recent out of aluminum that I think look a little better but in the end its never going to look "grate" (haha, Get it)
You can buy them online for standard window wells but some are pretty flimsy and you probably couldn't even step on it, they are intended I guess more for leaves and debris. http://bit.ly/YAaALx
