The Twenty Ten theme is "easy" enough to work with. This video actually details how to add a slideshow to the banner using the Meteor Slides plugin. Watch the entire thing so you understand the configuration and functionality. At the 10 minute mark, it deals specifically with what you want to do. The Meteor Slides versioning is newer, but you'll get the gist. Any questions, just yell or shoot me a pm.

Did as you suggested with the slide show and were able to reduce the home page by about half in size. Were tweak the site as we go but our interests are outdoors not on the comp.
