There are really only 3 things you need to do
1. Compact
2. Compact
3. Compact

This tends to be more of an issue when building on subdivision homes where builder are looking to get in-out fast with as little extra work as possible. They simply push the fill back in and "compact" with a doser or excavator.

Idealy its like anything else you need to compact the fill around the house in proper lifts to ensure stability. We had an application where we were putting in a pool and patio off a new construction, turned out there was about 8' of fill over the entire property we needed to remove and bring in all new gravel up from the native soil to ensure the pool and patio would not move.

Each situation is going to vary but if your putting your guarantee on it sometimes you need to go that extra mile.
Truck, Mower, Trimmer, Blower.....same as everyone else.
