And far too many people don't understand liability, thinking "oh it'll never happen to me".

Also keep in mind that if your employee is taking the truck home for a perk it is supposed to be reported to the IRS via his wage statement at the end of the year.


Here is what my employee handbook says about the matter.

The company vehicles are only to be used for Company business. Do not ask for personal use. If a company work vehicle is allowed to be taken home by your supervisor it is ONLY for work purposes, even when you are off duty.
The only exception to this would be if a medical emergency arises and there is no other vehicle available to go to the hospital. This exception must be reported to your supervisor the next morning.
NO SMOKING in company vehicles at any time.



ZERO TOLERANCE DRUG AND ALCOHOL

Possession, use or being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs or a controlled substance while on the job is prohibited. Driving a company vehicle or your own vehicle for company related matters while under the influence of drugs or alcohol or a controlled substance is prohibited. Distribution, sale, purchase or transfer of an illegal drug or a controlled substance is prohibited. Any violation of these standards of conduct will result in immediate termination and the Company has the right to bring the matter to the attention of the appropriate law enforcement authorities. The Company reserves the right to conduct searches of Company property and to implement other measures necessary to deter and detect abuse of this policy. A drug or alcohol test may be required at any time, pre-employment or a random test.

Last summer I allowed the company truck to be taken home and it was immediately used for all kinds of personal use.
I didn't think I had to explain how it worked. But I did.
I put a stop to that behavior and now its in the regs.

I found one on the net that some one else had written for their company and then put it online for all to use that wanted to.
I had to make a few changes and additions for my company.

So long as they are driving it for personal use. It's the same as if you are driving a buddy's car and you cause an accident. Your insurance pays it not the policy the vehicle is with. Of course your friend would still be subject to law suit since he owned the vehicle that caused the accident

I have never heard of this. As far as I know and what my insurance agent says the vehicle is covered not the driver.

What if you are driving your buddies truck but you don't have a vehicle or insurance?

And I highly doubt the employee's personal policy is going to pay for broken things like plows, commercial grade riders, commercial grade trailers and things like this!!!!!!
Heck they won't even know what those items are.

And I sure would not count on his insurance paying for those things!!!!
