$40? Wow, time to find a new supplier.

It is fairly common. We used the sod farm crew a few times when I was working for a contractor. We did the prep and touched it up with a couple of our guys on the site. The rest of our crew was busy doing more productive work. It worked out well as subcontract labor. There is no way in hell it will work out as a stand alone installation.
You might make that point to your prospect. It is labor for laying sod much like separating the labor of applying paint from scraping, sanding, prepping, laying down tarps, and washing the brushes. The rest is not going to happen on its own and none of it helps after the fact. |

Just price the prep work to the customer and let the sod farm lay the sod. Or tell the customer they will lay the sod right over what's there and the majority will die.

Most sod jobs here are installed over existing grass and most times all of it thrives as long as it is watered correctly. The first time I saw it I was shocked.

Last summer I did a big commercial install when I was calling around I found a company that installed for ten dollars more a pallet. So of course I let them do it. I had to do final grade anyway and only had a couple guys helping me on the job so it was a back saver!

Local sod farm here $75 delivered to the site if you buy 5 or more and $125 installed. This doesn't include any prep work or follow up with fert, just throw and go. I will prep the area and then have them lay it. The last job I stood there and watched 3 guys throw 9 pallets in 2 hours. This can be very profitable if priced and sold right.

That is insane! I wouldn't buy anything from them again.
