If it is a graft that means that you have the 'crown' too deep into the ground.... gently rake back the dirt around the trunk until you discover the crown of the tree or hit roots... obviously you would stop at the roots, but you should see the crown first...

The dish concept is a good one... I use it every time I plant...
I believe they are maples, not sure what kind. I didn't plant them, the home builder hired a company to plant them. What does the crown look like?
