New solo guy, need advice on a mower

I'm a crew leader for a mid-sized landscaping company who I've been with for about 8 years. I've been branching out on my own on weekends with the intention of taking my business full-time in a year. I have two clients who have asked me to mow (both under 1/2 acre) so naturally I've been shopping around for a mower.

I found a '99 Toro Proline 44" hydro walk behind about an hour from me that appears to be in excellent condition. Single owner, non-commercial use with 350 on the clock. A few small surface rust spots but overall very very clean. The mower comes with a grass catcher and Jrco de-thatcher. Seller is asking $3000.

My problem is I have limited experience mowing and with mowers. For my current employer I do hardscaping and pond installs, new plantings and some bed maintenance. I'm having trouble deciding if this is a good deal or not. My main concern is with the age of the machine and since I don't really know what to look or listen for I will run into problems despite its condition.

This is the only decent looking used hydro walk behind I've come across in the past few weeks of looking. Hydro WB would be best for me at this point as I intend to load it directly into my pickup. My plan B is an Exmark commercial 30.

$1200 maybe. Keep looking on Craigslist. Good deals come around pretty often on there. Good luck to you.

I got my 2005 pro line 44" for 1200. 3000.00 is way too much.

Thanks very much for the responses. I basically thought it was a little high but not into ripoff territory. I think I may be better off buying from a reputable local dealer since I don't have the knowledge to judge used equipment.

Vecchio that is great advice. I will definitely do that.

My two cents

Treat mower purchases just like your truck purchase. Do you want an average looking, sometimes running, rust-spotted truck pulling up in front of your client's site? Then, don't do that with the mower purchase. A new mower means dependable, professional, warranty, classy, supported and the best cutting technology on the market this year. Newer mower equates to increased production and efficiency, which means more saleable hours for your business....or more hometime for you.
Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
