Another Kawasaki Coil Question

Hey guys, was hoping to get a little advice about my mower. I have a JD 717a with about 371 hrs on it. It has the Kawasaki 19 hp FH601V engine. Well for the past year or so Ive been having some sputtering when I start up or during normal use, mainly from the transition from low idle to high idle. Before this season started, I put 2 new spark plugs on it and did the standard oil change, new blades, etc. Well the mower was running like new for about 2 weeks. Then about a week ago it started doing the same symptoms again, sputtering from the transition to low to high idle. I checked the spark plugs and they didnt appear to be fouled.. When it started to sputter again, I took the boots off of each spark plug... when I pulled the one on the right side it kept running, but when i pulled the boot on the left spark plug the mower died. I checked my connections and everything was good, so does this mean it could be my right coil going bad? I've read how you can check it with an OHM meter..does anyone have any instructions for this? The mower runs fine when i can get it to full throttle...and it never completely dies until it sputters and i take the spark boot off the left spark plug... Any thoughts?

Coils can generally only be tested by replacing it with one that is known to be good. If it is fuel injected, it could be the CDI or ECM box (which also can just about only be tested using a good one).

So, are the CDI and ECM, execuse my ignorance, part of the coil or are they seperate issues? From what I am describing does my issues sound like a coil? How much does this coil cost? I would just hate to buy a coil and then it not be the issue and I would have wasted my money.

The coils run around $50. Your machine may not even have a CDI/ECM. It may also be the voltage regulator which can also run around $50. Just to let you know, I am no mechanic but, there are not many parts that make up the electrical system on these engines.
Someone else on here may be able to give you better advise than I can.
We can get any of these parts I've mentioned and possibly at better price than the listed price I gave above.

Sure, let me know what you can do on one ignition coil for an FH601V-BS32 Kawasaki engine. Please include shipping in the price. I live in Mississippi, 39183 zip code.

Ok, I thought this may have come up. Apparently John Deere has a contract with Kawasaki on this engine which requires even the Kawasaki parts, including a replacement engine, to be purchased only through John Deere. It's a common scenario. I tried looking into that specific spec code and they do not give out the parts diagram. After searching about 6-8 difference spec variances I found 2 different possible coils for the FH601V.
But, that doesn't mean your JD dealer won't give you Kawasaki's part # or, you may be able to look on the original coil and find Kawi's # on it.
I would just need to verify the OEM part # before I can say I can get it.
Sorry for any extra inconvenience or disappointment.
Feel free to let me know what you find out.

Thanks,
Blake

Hey Blake,

I got the John Deere Part Number for the ignition coil from a john deere dealer a few minutes ago. The part number is MIA11064.

I did a google search for cooresponding part numbers and this is what I came up with..JOHN DEERE AM133525, JOHN DEERE MIA11064, KAWASAKI 21171-7007, KAWASAKI 21171-7006, KAWASAKI 21171-7001, KAWASAKI 21171-7003, KAWASAKI 21171-7002, KAWASAKI 21171-7018, KAWASAKI 21171-7034, KAWASAKI 21171-7026, KAWASAKI 21171-7037, KAWASAKI 21171-7024, KAWASAKI 21171-7013, KAWASAKI 21171-7022

I am assuming all of these would work? Anyway if you get a chance would you mind shooting me a quote including shipping for one coil.

Thanks,

Brian
