Not dead set on a Volvo at all. That's just the size Im looking for. That last one is too big. The first GMC probably a little too small. I couldn't go over 50k. Even that is pushing it for my limited use. I do a lot of lawn care and light stuff that occupies most of my time. Just need something to give me 5 or 6000 miles a year for a few years.

Its kind of like renting. The logistics just don't work out that well. And the planning ahead=pita. Plus I want to do the jobs. I desperately want to extend my season an extra month or two. And just want to slowly start into other jobs. I know from other equip I have that you also get work based off of the equip you have.

Try and find a old Mack RD or Ford 9000. They are tough trucks, pretty cheap and last a long time. If you buy a truck that can haul 20 tons then you could hire out when times are slow. Putting a tri-axle truck on the road is not cheap, tax, reg, insurance, upkeep, permits, and a lot more in NY.

I still have an 89' Mack RD690 that we use and still works every day.

Large amounts of power are not needed. At least 300 hp, 20 fronts, 44 rears, 20 lift axle, 8ll, tarp, air gate, locking rears, spring suspension, these are the specs to look for.

It is 8LL so 3 gears in reverse, and 1,2,3 have a low and high.

old 89 would be fine with me. I just don't want to buy a truck for 25k and then shortly put 10k into it and still have a 25k worth truck. Id rather spend 45. Of course theres still the risk of something going bad on a 45k truck too because its by no means new. That's what Ive been looking for is the 20-44 or 46 combo with or without a lift. As long as it can haul 20t I would like a basic tandem. Since you are in upstate too, can you tell me what your insurance is on your tri?

Most tandem trucks can't do 40,000 payload. The truck has to gross 70,000 lbs so not enough axles. The tare is 30,000 on my tri-axle. Like you said 46 and 20 is 66 so still not enough. Most trucks have 44 rears plus 20 front so 64 minus 30 tare is 34 which leaves about 15 tons. My 89 is a tandem that will do 15 tons all day but for hire out purposes I use my 2001 Mack tri-axle with a over weight permit.

You get paid by the ton or yard most of the time so bigger is better.

Insurance is not cheap but don't have number because it is part of my whole package. Registration is over $500 just for plates.

If I had to guess I would say at least $3000 for a dump truck for insurance. I am a lot older than you I bet with multiple vehicles, clean license.
