Toro GRANDSTAND "Stiff Control Arms" Anyone had it repaired???

I have a 2010 Toro Grandstand 48" / 24HP. Over the last few months my control arms have become very tough to move. It has been causing a lot of blisters on the hands. I started troubleshooting the problem while I had some downtime and came to some conclusions as to what the problem is.

If I put the "speed control lever" in the slowest position, the controls are like they were when it was new. I can operate the machine with my thumbs. But once I put it in the fast mode it becomes stiff again.

I read somewhere that they (Toro) suggested to remove the " speed control" and rework the system. I called the dealer and they said they have not had to do this but would check on it. Does anyone have any experiences with this?

I found out they do have a "Speed control Removal Kit." Got it on order at the dealer. Its supposedly covered whether your machine is under warranty or not.

Eh...... It's a BIG job. I've done over 25 of them. Works very well when done.
1) There are holes to be drilled. Measure twice - drill once.
2) Be very careful to ck for suction and return hose interference upon completion.
3) Take your time. Read instructions first.
Easy to screw thing up. Hope they gave you the kit n/c
There was a service bulletin.
After a few, it took about 5 hrs. Toro pays f/r for 4 hrs
It was almost physically impossible to do it in that amount of time.
If done correctly, you'll be happy with the results.
The quality of your dealer is suspect if they never heard of it.
They don't keep up on things. That makes them hacks

I looked at the kit online and it does look like a lot of work. My dealer has not had to do this before. Hope he doesnt screw it up. I may pass on your info to him just to help him out. Thanks for the info. It sounds like it will get my mower back up to speed and make the controls operate without laying on them so much. It has worn holes in my hands for sure.

It will bring the reverse back to new. Night and day. All depends on the mechanic.
Post the end result if you think of it. I might be able to help with the..... eh...
"adjustments" if things didn't go well. There's not much I haven't seen or done on a
Grandstand. Still think they are the best stander on the market by a wide margin. Pretty
much all the kinks are worked out now.

I definatley will keep you updated. I may need to do some tweaking. I do love the mower though. I have had a couple of stand-ons and WB, but this one has by far been the most reliable. I have 500 hrs. and only replaced belt, Solenoid, rear tires, and all the basic maint. Only thing I have found difficult is getting the deck level. Its very close now but if cutting on a slight hill at an angle it will dig in on the low side. Of course thats on Bermuda mostly, which is hard to hide imperfections anyway.

They don't keep up on updates. They may have excellent mechanics. I shouldn't have berated them without knowing them, but the better dealers tend to keep up with service updates and service bulletins.
Rarely does a company put out a new design and not experience "growing"
pains. The updates target those problem areas, thus keeping customers
happy (hopefully)

Our Grandstand went through this. All newer ones already have this worked out. It is much faster and responds way better. They take out all the useless junk and put in a no nonsense system. Find a good toro dealer and you should be able to get it done in a day.

My 2012 came without the speed control, but my 2010 came with it, it really is a night and day difference, I just have to find enough time to get my 2010 to the dealer, but yea I love my grandstands!
