well we went back and finished it up, I foudn 4 nests, ranging from softball to basketball size... all of them were the same... bigger than a honey bee, but smaller than a bumble bee... black with a grey stripe.

Could be bald-faced hornets.
Prefer lightly wooded areas. Large gray nests. Highly protective of the area near their nest. Will sting repeatedly.
