You are thinking of this thing. Farmers around here use them for bedding stalls.

yup that's it.. have you seen them in action, theres a few on youtube and look promising...

yea I think this is the ticket, other than the side widener but not sure how much damage that would do to the flat work either.. we've used them to spread topsoil at the edge of pavements along interstates with great success...
