Following up on failed bids

This year I've been asked to bid out a few buildings or large residential properties. All of which I did not get. One was a private school. One a county building, doctors office, etc.

I'm curious about following up to see what the winning price might have been just for my records. Not sure if this is in line but it would be nice to know what properties were going for and whether I could even compete of the larger properties.

I ask. Often times the money is not that much off of what I had. 10/week will make a hell of a difference

I would always ask after I failed to get it. Do this face to face. Its too easy to get blown of on the phone. When you come back face to face the potential customer will see you are honestly concerned about your business and that's a good time to offer services that maybe the landscaper they chose may not offer.

Follow ups on the phone are generally pretty good for me. Although I generally don't request a price paid considering I know what I need on a job before the proposal is even started.

It is a great idea to follow up with estimates you have given to see where the customer is with it. Especially if they have not made up their mind yet, death in the family, etc.

Knowing your prices should be the only thing you really need know to make a profit.

County building should be public records. I don't follow up as much as I should but when I do I usually get valuable information.

We follow up on every job we are not awarded. Last week we lost a job because the competing contractor was more available to talk about the project on the phone. I chatted with both her and her husband for over 45 minutes each!!!?? and someone is always at the office waiting for the phones to ring. Silly people.
