Gunite Pool Demo

I am demoing this pool that has too be the most well built pool in my life. This thing has rebar in a grid on 1 foot centers through the whole pool with walls 5 plus inches thick.Anyone else had a pool like this?

Just yank the walls in with a 20 ton hoe, gunnite concrete is weak as plaster once the rebar starts to bend, I did one years ago and it was only a 2 hour job.

Yea the Gunnite isn't that hard to hammer. I doubt you have room for a 210 sized excavator, although if you do great. Assuming your don't, I would put a hammer on your Kubota and have a guy with a demo saw cutting rebar. Hammer out a grid, cut and pull. The smaller the bucket on the hoe the better as you already know for pulling concrete.

Sounds about normal for a pool around this area.. I prefer closer 6-8in thick in the floor and 8 plus inches in the walls. But you always miss a little with shaving and so on.

We always shoot for 12in squares in the rebar.. And we'll put some at an angle all the way across the pool depending on the curves and nature of the build..

Steel schedules vary by region but normally the #3 steel mat is 12x12. Alternates begin at the springline -3 feet to make the grid 6x12. Floor bars also run across the break. The bond beam has 3 horizontal bars. 2 on top and one underneath the stirrup radius. Another horizontal 6 in down completes the shell reinforcement with the exception of skimmers, lights and swim-outs.

Gunite is a 7 sack mix design and when applied properly has breaking strengths well above 3750 psi. We have shot test cylinders on state jobs that broke at over 5000 psi.

Shot-crete on the other hand is a wet mix design which may be what the other guys are talking about.

I worked in and around the pool business from mid 60s until 09. Dug, tied, plumbed, shot a lot of holes.

Swimming pools get their strength from their inverted dome construction.

The pool structure is why harder than the deck.

I think this will be a good learning opportunity of what works and doesn't work. I look forward to the pictures and finding out how the job goes for you. What sized machine did you decide on?
