Melting Air Filter ?

This is a Stens Inner Air Filter (pn 100-780) off a B&S Vanguard 61000 with 180 hrs since last change. The filter media appears to be melted, causing the holes. Outer filter is intact. I have 3 engines and a Kohler ECV749 with the same problem. Any ideas what might cause this?

Last year I noticed the inner filter on my fx801v doing the exact same thing. Would love to hear some more opinions. It worried me when I first saw it but not sure what I can do about it. Has always been noisy as hell since new but runs great . Pushing 900hrs.

Not necessarily Slapper....... The flame from a backfire is contained in the connector hose, But..... The extreme heat has to go someplace under the backfire pressure, So it hits the end of the pre-cleaner and melts the media with no flame marks......

Yea. Problem is it was hat way 50 hrs or so into the change and progresse from there. Has not gotten much worse or I would have already changed it. It kinda makes me twitch when I think about it! I am picky about maintnence!
