Remote controls

Hey guys, do each manufacturer of clocks I.e. Rainbird, hunter, do you have to use their brand of remote control and receiver systems? What I mean is I really like the hunter smart port, is that capable to use on rainbird clocks? Hunter has the REM terminal for the remote receiver, but I don't see these in the rainbirds (at least the ESP)
