might sound crazy but at my house (and customers that request it) I use my shop vac to get the acorns out of sago palms and yuccas. I also use to get the leaves up around my backyard pond. Actually works quite well. haven't tried it on walnuts but I bet it would work.

The walnuts I'm referring to are the size of an apple and weigh the same of not more. My shop vac doesn't have near enough power to pick them up. I could see your method working effectively on acorns though.
