Are online ads worth the money?

I've had a free yellow page listing for awhile now. I recently looked and we are in the 85th spot. I see advertising options from $20 to $160 per month. (There's no way we can afford $160). Still is it worth it to purchase some of the cheaper advertising? Do people actually look online to find us? We are willing to invest in raod signs, cards and flyers but internet ads are a new field to us. Also should we be looking at other sites besides Yellow Pages and Facebook. Just trying to get as much information as I can on what I should do.

Yellow Pages hasn't been relevant in almost a decade.

Google AdWords works well for me.

Less than $160 a month for an advertising budget is low. You have to spend money to make money.

Rgodwin-
The question should be, "When someone in my service area is looking for a lawn care company, how will they find/search for the potential contractor?" If you can't answer that, you're just throwing money away regardless of what you choose...

A.W.--
Have you considered improving your website for organic Google rankings? Even though the leads may slow down with the transition, you would have a much more valuable asset at the end of the journey rather than just throwing money at adwords each month. Or you could do both? Just a thought...

I wish you told that last part about spending money to make money to my partner. It's a battle just to buy signs with him.

Do you have a business number? When we started we had our landline changed to a business listing and it's like $250 a quarter for a yellowpage listing. Screw that noise. The business listing added $8 a month to our phone bill and that has been the best money we ever spent. Nowadays that line forwards to my cell. We don't even have a phone hooked up. The incoming calls get forwarded directly to my cell and that is another $1.95 a month.

How do you restrict or eliminate the unwanted calls. I have been at home here the last couple weeks & the phone rings around 10 times a day. When I answer it, around 7 of the calls are either someone wanting me to donate to the police benefit something or other, other telemarketers, or there is no one on the other end of the call. I am on the " Do not call list" & I thought I was told, that if you are a business that the " Do not call list" does not apply to businesses.

The Retired State Troopers Fund called asking for a donation. I offered truckloads of grass clippings to make compost. They declined my offer. Did you happen to go to the NJPlants show last week. I wanted to, but did not, because of the snow. I imagine it was dead up there.

You hang up on those calls. When the companies who's job it is can't find you to call and harass you-what does that mean about the customers you want to find you?
