If you were able to get work without a website, then put equal work into the "SEO" of that side of the business too.

Also, have your customers look at your site, even if you already work for them. Ask them what they like best about it. What website professionals think can often be off-the-mark because they don't think like your customers. Find out what your real audience thinks.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not really planning on the website helping me much at this point, and have a different marketing plan in place, but I had fun working on the SEO so far, and my goal is to get to the first page and hopefully stay there. It would help me decrease the amount of fliers and yard signs I purchase each year.

Get the SEO Site Tools plugin for Chrome and you can see the H1 for any page.

Your H1 should be something like "Lawn Care in Grand Rapids" or "[Your Company]- Grand Rapids Lawn Care".

If you get the plugin you can check the H1 tags for your competitors, which might help you craft yours.

And a unique h1 for each page just like for the title tag? Also, is it normal for the plugin to load data for 5 minutes before showing anything?

It shows you where the bottlenecks are - you've got two key ones:

1. Your hosting provider is slow returning the initial HTML file when requested (2+ seconds is WAY long). Nothing else loads until this file is sent. It might be a problem in your wordpress installation or it might be a sign of an overloaded host.

2. It looks like you've got a plugin "Wordfence" that is causing load issues. This might be the problem causing issue #1 (or vice versa). You can see some discussion about this here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/r...-shared-server

Hope this helps!

Aaron
I deleted wordfence, and my site is loading a lot faster. Thanks for the tip!
