Walker Mowers

Hello, I have been looking to buy a used walker mower, all you guys that know these mowers what would be some things that I need to watch out for?
Most of them around here seem to look beat up from the photos and a lot of hours on them... Thanks for any info you can give me

I'd stay away from any with the kohler 16 or other carburated engines. The fuel injected ones are much better. When you look at some let the hydros get hot. They will work well even if worn out until they get hot.

It's all superficial . The 16 hp was a 2000-2004 engine choice on the MC and it had recalls to repowered to the 18 hp 2006-20010? it was a fine engine.and the swap is easy.

The MT has several older engines all seem dependable.

On liquid cooled walkers be sure to check the actual frame holding and under the radiator( it rust out here)

Be sure the ghs tube is not showing wear on its ends, the hinge wears and the point it touches the deck it will break causing binding. The round end of the tube should have
a steel band and be round if not binding will occurr causing the deck to lock while lowering into the cut position.

Take off the hydro pump belt- spin each ideler pulley and note noise( and rough or noise will multiply in sound while running.
Start the engine, full rpm, hold te mower still and move the forward speed control to wide open, now just let the finger controls go and note what happens.
If -
it dosnt spin tire and accelerate directly pumps could be weak
you hear a thump thump under your bottom, replace the drive belt.

Lift the ghs box - look at the blower chute tube and
Note rust, jagged damage.
Look at the plastic box, be
Sure the square has the metal trim and it's rivited in good.

Lift the rear of the machine and note play in the tire bearings then hold the caster, and shake to see if it has major play.

Be sure the hydro pumps have the cooling fins and they are not new, a sign the owner may had ran it without , and is unloading it after they noticed its not pulling correctly.

Check the color of all fluids, do not forget the pro box.

If you plan to ever use accessories be sure to in hook the pro shaft at the quick connect ( it will seize in a few 100 hours if not lubed.
Be sure the deck will slide out of the mower deck arms, the arms move up and down and the pto slides out as well.
All a sign of improper or proper maintenance.
Also remove the deck covers and note if the area is clean or gunk , is it leaking ( grime) , check the pto shaft, and clean off one top cover and open it(4) 1/4" bolts. Be sure fluid covers the shaft, 1/8" above the top of the shaft. Reinstall notes sing up the cork seal( do not over tighten)

Lift the deck, is all the baffles in place? Welds broke etc. remove the blades and check for seeping is blades sharp?
Reinstall correctly. Run the mower in place 10 minuets on clean concrete and blades on , after 10 minutes shut off the blades and pull up 10' foot. Now note the area where the mower was previously( seepages when cold could be a leak when hot , your looking for any fluid , it's going to take time to fix.

I will buy any used walker out there period if the price is fair. I love rebuilding them.

Hey hemiman you looking at a great machine very high maintenance machine but worth every cent.
Ok let's start at the inspection process look at PTO shaft look for play at T box new one is around $200.
Next inspect the blower impeller and housing look for wear and cracks new one $400.next remove the dip stick from your PTO box milky color oil bad sign new one $450 ok let's move on to hydro's I usually do two texts on these one is drop a quarter size magnet on reservoir cup look for metal shavings when you remove magnet from cup if it collected lots shavings bad sign cost $800 each now we have engine EFI engines are great engines little more pricey to trouble shoot compared to carb engines look for oil leaks on engine noises and if you can take a compression text that would be great. If you have any question on something you not sure about don't hesitate to ask

I will add that nothing I,nor Landeus2 posted is a real reason to run simply a way to get a lower price while negotiating price.

and so this a guy with no experience who has never run a fleet of these things?

Did he copy this advice/knowledge off google or photoshop it?

it doesn't sound like a new kid or a fake to me…. just saying.

Ill also say a lot of people never EVER use accessories or alternate decks on these machines, I would definitely take the deck off
check Pto and disconnect, see if you can EVEN take the deck off! if the rods haven't been off, it could be a bear to take off/ put back on.

Also ask if any accessories come with machine, tine detahcher? anything they bought for this machine at original purchase? anything after?
what about spare replacement parts?
people feel the machines and then forget they have stuff laying about..then CL them later…. can always make a good package deal.

Ive spent about three weeks making a deal with a guy who wants 7k for a 26efi 48" GHS.
Ive got him now talking about $7500 for that machine, plus a 42" mulching deck , spare parts (including a used hopper) and a slightly bent tine rake.
