core aerator vs. regular aerator, overseeding yard

I'm going to overseed our church's yard monday, I wish I had got to it last fall but I didn't so I'm hoping its not to late, the forecast looks like I may be OK if I do it in the next few days. I'm going to mow it down low and remove the clippings then run an aerator over it before I spread the seed. My question is can I get by with using a regular aerator or will the core aerator make a big difference? Also I really like the falcon fescue but southern states has a fescue/kbg blend I thought about trying but there's so much out there I can't make up my mind. I apologize for sounding so dumb when it comes to this iv searched and searched for weeks and I'm still learning, I've been in lawn care for years but I've never messed with seeding much, just cut the grass... I'm on the KY/TN line, thanks for any help
