I'm trying to get started again!

I don't even remember if I introduced myself here before, but it would have been 10 years ago anyway. Unfortunately I haven't accomplished much in the last 10 years, but I haven't given up either.

Anyway, I'm from San Antonio, TX. People are always telling me there's too much competition here; don't start a lawn service. Why am I so stubborn, and keep trying? I don't know exactly, but I suppose I feel like I don't have to be just another mediocre lawn service.

If I hadn't had 30 customers at one time, I probably would have given up by now. Of course, 30 customers probably isn't enough to make a living, but I got those customers in a relatively short time. Yes, the economy was better, so maybe I have to work a little harder. I don't enjoy the heat that much, but I must like the rest of it, because I keep trying. So I bought the minimum equipment to get started, and passed out my first 100 flyers today.

Good Luck and don't worry about there being too much competition, that is pretty much normal in this business now. 25 years ago when my company was started we only had a few small companies in our area (Cleveland, Ohio). Now it's saturated. Some differences between when we started and now are the level of information out there to help you along with your business. Things like PLANET (The Professional Landcare Network) and local trade associations have been around for awhile but also there are sites like this, lots of trade magazines, podcasts and blogs about running a small business and much more. So even though you have the competition it also sounds like you have the drive! And with that and the right resources you can go far in this business, best of luck!

Thank you. I am glad I found this site. I'm sure I've learned a few things here; I should probably go back and read some of my old posts to refresh what I've learned. Right now I'm mainly focused on getting customers. My goal is to pass out 500 flyers today. I don't think I've ever done that many. I picked out an area close to me where the streets look like a grid, so it should be relatively quick to just section off a large rectangle with over 20 streets in it and hit every house. I will report progress.
