Briggs powered TimeMaster goes into over speed.

Spring that regulates the governor appears normal.

Gas has been leaking from the carb intermently causing hydro lock of the cylinder upon starting.

Put a fuel shutoff valve on the gas line to keep the hydro lock from happening. Float could not be seating the needle. Also could be a air leak around the intake causing the idle raising.

Repair it properly, Clean the carb and install a new float needle valve..... Extra fuel from flooding can cause all sorts of run issues, Also check the oil for fuel contamination.....

Thanks for the imput,

I'm parking this unit until I can chase this down. Buying another TimeMaster today. This mower is used heavily and I have been putting off getting a back up for sometime.

If you purchased a older (leftover) unit, they did not come with fuel filters. Manufacturing debris would/could cause carb leakage. It should be a warrantable repair regardless of age. Make sure the new one has it. Briggs will pay for the installation if it does not. DON"T LET THE DEALER DENY IT. It should be a known problem to the dealer.

If you mean fuel is getting in the engine by "hydro locking" you will need to change the oil and filter immediately as the oil has become contaminated with fuel and running the engine under these circumstances will greatly accelerate wear and tear internally... One way to tell is by sniffing the dipstick (or the way I do it is rub dipstick oil on hand, then smell hand), you need a clear nose and a clean hand to do this, then if it has even a faint odor of gasoline that means your oil has become contaminated by fuel.

Sure enough the old TimeMaster in question did not have a fuel filter. The new one I bought today does have an inline filter.

When I purchased the first unit....it was frequently hard to start. Dealer shop looked at it found nothing of course. The new one starts without any issues.

Ironically the new unit seems to rev faster [not overspeed fast] and seems to have more power than the old one did…? Just engaging the blades on the old one when new had a tendency to kill the engine. After X number of hours it seemed to have a bit more grunt. [Break in factor].

Not sure if it is worth the trouble to even drop it off at the dealer just for an inline fuel filter...?

I do wonder when Toro/Briggs atarted putting the inline filters on these...?

Around the beginning of 2013. And the repair will address the leaking problem instead of a 1/2 azz landscaper fix.
But, by all means, suit yourself.

Well if they want to replace the needle and seat plus clean the carb and fuel filter....might be worth the effort to drop it off.

I'm actually a FAA licensed Airframes and Powerplant Mechanic.
